In the impressive duo exhibition 'In search of stillness' photographers Michiel Heijmans and Annelie Willemijn Stroo (Annewil) combine their creative forces. At De Drvkkery in Middelburg, they seamlessly aligned their black-and-white photography. Exhibition at the largest bookshop in Zeeland

For years, Michiel, whom you probably also know from the photography podcast '30 minuten sluitertijd', has had a holiday address in Middelburg and has therefore been a familiar visitor to De Drvkkery, the largest and most iconic bookshop in Zeeland. The dream of exhibiting his own work in this inspiring place had been simmering for a while. In the end, it was a Zeeland friend who gave him the decisive push with the simple words: "But why don't you just ask?"

Together at the kitchen table

Michiel didn't want to carry this exhibition alone and sought out a collaboration with photography friend and local photographer Annelie Willemijn Stroo (Annewil), whom he had known for a few years via Instagram. Because both have a solid background in photography and bring the necessary exhibition experience with them, things moved incredibly fast. Annewil said a wholehearted 'yes' straight away. With two laptops and a stack of test prints, they sat down together at the kitchen table to decide which black-and-white images would make the final selection.

Unity as a guiding principle

When choosing the photos, Michiel put 'unity' at the centre. Each image had to contribute to the calm and overall atmosphere of the space. For Michiel, a photo of a man behind glass is a very special work. This intriguing image touches on the theme of privacy in a very subtle and layered way and forms one of the most important points of rest within the series.

The bridge between two visions

Annewil's images breathe pure stillness. She knows how to capture calm in places that are normally hectic, such as well-known Zeeland locations that are flooded with tourists in summer. Annewil builds her series carefully; the very last image is the only one within her series to show a person, which is exactly the visual bridge to Michiel's work, in which the human being is the central focal point in every photo.

The loner in the big city

Where Annewil seeks calm in the surroundings, Michiel searches in crowded world cities for that one quiet moment and that specific loner. A striking example of this is his photo taken from the famous Pont des Arts in Paris. While surrounded by more than four hundred passers-by, he managed to aim his camera precisely at that one person on the steps across the way. Capturing that one isolated moment in the midst of the madness is the common thread in his street photography.

Gallery quality on Dibond: deep contrasts and maximum detail

For the presentation at De Drvkkery, the choice fell on prints on Fujifilm Lustre photo paper, mounted as Photo on Dibond. When unpacking the prints, both Michiel and Annewil were extremely pleasantly surprised by the end result. The contrasts of the black-and-white shots leap off the material and even in the darkest shadow areas the fine lines and details remain razor-sharp visible.
