How do you hang wall decorations on the wall? First decide where you want to hang your wall decoration, as there are different hanging recommendations for each place in your home. Popular places to hang your wall decoration include above the sofa in the living room, in the bedroom above the bed or on an empty wall.

Once the location of the wall decoration has been decided, it is good to know which format fits best in that spot. Below are the most practical tips and rules of thumb for popular hanging locations.

Hanging wall decoration in living room: above the sofa

DON’T – Make sure your wall decoration is no wider than the sofa.
DO – Grab a tape measure and use the 2/3rds rule.

Do you want to match your photo or photos with the sofa? Besides the fact that it is important that the colours of the photo match your interior, it is also nice that your wall decoration hangs at the right height. These Tips will help you:

  1. How high should you hang your wall decoration? Do not hang your wall decoration higher than 155 cm above the ground. This is measured from the ground to the centre of the wall decoration. A handy rule of thumb is that this distance should be between 145 and 155 cm.
  2. Make sure the wall decoration has the following width: 2/3rds of the width of your sofa. Make sure the wall decoration is not wider than your sofa, because then there will be little harmony between the wall decoration and the sofa.
Tips! Multiply the width of your sofa by 0.66 and you know exactly how wide your wall decoration should be. Say your sofa is 3 metres, then your wall decoration should be about 3 x 0.66 = 198 cm (rounded off 2 metres) wide.
  3. The distance between the bottom of the wall decoration and the bench is between 20 and 25 cm.
  4. If you plan to hang several photos above the sofa, the rule of thumb is to keep 5 to 15 cm space between them.

Hanging wall decoration in bedroom: above the bed

DON’T – Don’t hang a too-small size above your bed.
DO – Hang one large or several small wall decorations next to each other. It is also very nice to combine your wall decoration with other accessories such as a mirror or matching ceramic wall plates.

Give your bedroom a personal touch with unique photos on the wall. Depending on your own taste, choose how many wall decorations to hang. Hang one or more photos above your bed using the following guidelines:

  1. The width of your wall decoration is at least 2/3rds of the width of the bed. Again, you can multiply the width of the bed by 0.66. Then you know exactly how wide your Photo or photo wall should be.
  2. The distance between the bottom of the wall decoration and the bed is between 20 and 25 cm.
  3. If you plan to hang two or more wall decorations above your bed, keep 5 to 15 cm space between them.

Tips! Have a calming landscape or another photo that makes you relax printed on dibond to create more peace in the bedroom. It is also nice to hang a motivational text or inspirational quote in your bedroom.

Extra tip! Would you rather hang a smaller-sized wall decoration anyway? Then place a shelf above the bed with your favourite Photo combined with other nice decorations such as a nightlight, a plant or a vase with dried flowers.

Hanging photos on a blank wall

DON’T – Don’t place wall decorations too far apart.
DO – Leave 5 to 15 cm space between your wall decorations.

Do you also have an empty wall in your home that you would like to brighten up? Did you know that wall decoration is a nice and easy solution for that? These Tips will have you brightening up that bare wall in no time:

Choose a nice photo or several photos to hang on the wall.

  1. Calculate the best size to hang. The total width you want to fill with wall decoration is at least 4/7ths of the width of the wall.
  2. Tips! Multiply the width of your wall by 0.57 and you know exactly how wide your wall decoration should be.
  3. Using the width you have just calculated, decide whether you want one or several wall decorations next to each other. Make sure that the width of all the photos together is the width you have just calculated.
  4. Hang the wall decoration between 145 and 155 cm above the ground. This distance is between the ground and the centre of the wall decoration.
  5. If you choose to hang two or more photos, make sure the distance between them is the same. Again, keep the 5-15 cm spacing.

Tip: Make your photos stand out even more with a photo behind Plexiglas. The crystal-clear plexiglass makes the colours of your photo stand out even more.

Wall decoration above mantelpiece or cabinet

DON’T – Don’t hang too large a wall decoration above the piece of furniture.
DO – Create a nice composition between the wall decoration and accessories on the cabinet or mantelpiece.

Mix and match your favourite Photo with that cute cabinet or that classic mantelpiece. And complete that nook with other decorations. But how do you do it?

  1. Choose which Photo you want to combine with which decorations.
  2. The width of your wall decoration is at least 2/3rds of the piece of furniture. If you want to place many/large decorations around your photo, it is possible to deviate from this rule of thumb to free up more space.
  3. Hang the Photo between 10 and 30 cm above the piece of furniture.

Hanging wall decoration above stairs

DON’T – Don’t hang different formats next to each other.
DO – Let the photos come together and tell a story.

How fun is it to hang your favourite photos by the stairs. It is a unique and creative way to use this space. Follow the following Tips for a great end result:

  1. It is important that the wall decoration hangs at stairstep height.
  2. The space between the wall decorations is the same. Here, do not measure in centimetres but in steps. For example, you can keep two steps between each wall decoration.
  3. The distance between the step and the wall decoration is between 145 and 155 cm to the centre of the wall decoration.
  4. When hanging wall decorations, use the same formats to create a calm and pleasing image.

Tips! Choose a framed Photo and have the unique frames match the colour of your staircase.
