You’ve ordered a beautiful photo book, but now it turns out the pages are wavy. In this article, you’ll learn all about wavy pages and what you can do about them.

Photo Book with Wavy Pages

You’ve ordered a photo book and received it in perfect condition, but now the pages inside seem to be wavy. That’s not what you expected, and you’re looking for a solution.

For our photo books, we use photo-chemical (photo) paper because it offers much better quality and print sharpness. Photo paper has a layer of PE material on the outside Polyethylene. This layer prevents the photo book from absorbing moisture, which is important for keeping your photo book looking beautiful for as long as possible. We also don’t use water-based glue, which improves the durability and longevity of the binding. Additionally, there is a layer of “regular” paper inside, which can absorb moisture.

Since neither the glue nor the photo paper can absorb moisture, only the inner paper layer can. When humidity levels fluctuate significantly, the pages may become slightly wavy. We often see this in the autumn when it’s damp outside, but it can also occur in summer if it’s very warm outside and air conditioning is running indoors. As long as the album remains in a room where humidity is between 40% and 60%, nothing will happen to the book. However, during shipping from our production facility to you, the book may experience varying humidity levels, and it will need some time to adjust.

How to Prevent / What to Do

The photo book needs some time to rest and adjust to its new environment, so give it a little patience.

  • Place the book in a dry spot and let it settle. Keep it open, ensuring there is space between all pages. This allows the pages to evenly absorb moisture from the air.
  • Make sure the humidity in that space is between 40% and 60%. If the humidity is outside this range, the photo book will not flatten properly, and new books may also show this effect.
  • Give the book time especially during seasonal transitions like spring and autumn, when humidity levels fluctuate, the book may need around ten days to fully straighten.

Tip: Place the book in a slightly warmed room and leave it alone. It will flatten naturally over time avoid moving it.

Sending a new copy during this period won’t help, because it will go through the same journey and end up in the same environment at your home, where it could again develop wavy pages. By allowing the book to rest in a stable environment with consistent humidity, the pages usually flatten on their own.
