Black-and-white photography is all about atmosphere, form and contrast. By consciously using light and shadow, each image gains depth and a distinctive character. Our black-and-white prints are produced on Ilford Galerie Digital Silver RC photo paper. This paper has a weight of 190 g/m², with a neutral image tone and bright whites. Unlike colour photo paper, true black-and-white photo paper does not suffer from colour casts. The result is a characteristic black-and-white photo print that stays as true as possible to the original image.

White border for non-standard aspect ratios

When the aspect ratio of your photo differs from the selected format, we automatically add a white border to the print. This ensures your entire image is preserved and nothing is cropped. The white space is functional and can easily be trimmed to size if desired, for framing or finishing.

FAQ

: What makes an Ilford print so unique?
An Ilford print is a high-quality photo print produced on professional Ilford photo paper. Ilford is renowned for its quality and is favoured by photographers who value deep black tones and exceptionally smooth tonal transitions, such as in skies or skin tones.
: Why do I have white space on my print?
The Ilford photo paper we use has a fixed 2:3 aspect ratio. As a result, if you order a size with a different ratio, white space may appear around the image.
For example, if you order a 13 × 13 cm print, it is printed on 13 × 19 cm paper, which automatically creates white borders. The image itself does have the size you specified, but the white edges may need to be trimmed afterwards.
Our printing process is highly automated, which unfortunately means we cannot trim the prints manually.
If you supply a photo file with a 2:3 aspect ratio, the image will be printed fully edge to edge on the paper, without any white borders.
: Can I choose image optimisation?
No, unfortunately this option is not available for Ilford prints.
: Can I add a white border to my photos?
Yes. During the ordering process, you can choose white borders by ticking the “White borders (WB)” option. The white border is approximately 5% of the selected photo size. The photo paper itself does not become larger; instead, the image is placed slightly smaller on the paper.
: Is the print too large for the frame?
It can happen that a print is just slightly too large for the photo frame. This can have several causes. For example, a frame may differ by a few millimetres from the stated size, or the photo paper may turn out slightly larger during production.
The easiest way to resolve this is to carefully place the glass plate on top of the print and trim the excess along the edges using a sharp knife.
Make sure to properly protect the surface underneath to prevent damage while cutting.
: Which paper types are available?
You can choose between a glossy (Glossy) or silk (Lustre) finish.
If you plan to frame the photo, we recommend opting for a matte finish to prevent the print from sticking to the glass and to reduce the risk of marks or rings forming.
