Have you taken a stunning photo and want to display it beautifully in a frame at home? Then pause for a moment before grabbing the screws and drill. Hanging wall art is an art in itself. Where is the right place for a frame, and how do you make sure your photo truly stands out? With a few tips and tricks, you can hang your photo perfectly on the wall. In this blog, we show you how to do it the best way.

How do you hang wall art on the wall? Start by deciding where you want to hang your wall art, as each space in your home calls for different hanging advice. Popular spots include above the sofa in the living room, above the bed in the bedroom, or on an empty wall.

Once you’ve chosen the location, it’s important to determine which size works best for that space. Below, we share practical tips and useful rules of thumb for the most popular hanging locations.

Hanging wall art in the living room: above the sofa

DON’T – Make sure your wall art is not wider than the sofa.
DO – Grab a tape measure and use the two-thirds rule.

Want to match your photo or wall art perfectly with your sofa? Besides choosing colours that fit your interior, it’s important to hang your wall art at the right height. These tips will help:

  1. How high should you hang wall art?
Hang your wall art no higher than 155 cm from the floor, measured from the floor to the centre of the artwork. A useful rule of thumb is a height between 145 and 155 cm.
  2. Use the right width
Your wall art should be about two-thirds of the width of your sofa. Make sure it is never wider than the sofa, as this disrupts the visual balance.
Tip: Multiply the width of your sofa by 0.66 to find the ideal width.
    Example: a 3-metre sofa → 3 × 0.66 ≈ 198 cm (about 2 metres).
  3. Distance from the sofa
Keep a distance of 20 to 25 cm between the bottom of the wall art and the sofa.
  4. Multiple artworks
If you’re hanging several pieces above the sofa, leave 5 to 15 cm of space between them.

Hanging wall art in the bedroom: above the bed

DON’T – Don’t hang a piece that’s too small above your bed.
DO – Choose one large piece or several smaller ones side by side. You can also combine wall art with accessories like a mirror or matching ceramic wall plates.

Give your bedroom a personal touch with unique photos on the wall. Depending on your taste, you can hang one or multiple pieces above your bed. Use these guidelines:

  1. Width: Your wall art should be at least two-thirds of the width of the bed. Multiply the bed width by 0.66 to find the ideal size.
  2. Height: Keep a distance of 20 to 25 cm between the bottom of the wall art and the bed.
  3. Multiple pieces: If you hang two or more artworks, leave 5 to 15 cm of space between them.

Tip: Choose a calming landscape or another relaxing image printed on dibond to create a serene atmosphere in the bedroom. An inspiring quote or motivational text also works beautifully here.

Extra tip: Prefer a smaller piece? Place a shelf above the bed and style it with your favourite photo, combined with decorative items like a bedside lamp, a plant or a vase with dried flowers.

Hanging photos on an empty wall

DON’T – Don’t place your wall art too far apart.
DO – Leave 5 to 15 cm of space between each piece.

Do you have an empty wall at home you’d like to brighten up? Wall art is a beautiful and simple solution. With these tips, you’ll transform that bare wall in no time:

  1. Choose one strong image or several photos you’d like to hang on the wall.
  2. Calculate the ideal size. The total width filled with wall art should be at least four-sevenths of the wall width.
Tip: Multiply the wall width by 0.57 to find the perfect total width.
  3. Based on this width, decide whether to choose one large piece or several smaller ones side by side. Make sure their combined width matches the calculated size.
  4. Hang the wall art at a height of 145 to 155 cm from the floor, measured to the centre of the artwork.
  5. If you hang two or more pieces, keep the spacing equal between them, again using 5 to 15 cm as a guideline.

Tip: Make your photos really stand out with a photo behind plexiglass. The crystal-clear finish enhances colour depth and makes your image truly pop.

Wall decoration above a mantelpiece or cabinet

DON’T – Don’t hang wall art that is too large above the furniture.
DO – Create a balanced composition between the wall art and the accessories on the cabinet or mantelpiece.

Mix and match your favourite photo with that stylish cabinet or classic mantelpiece, and complete the look with other decorative elements. But how do you do that?

  1. Decide which photo you want to combine with which accessories.
  2. The width of your wall decoration should be at least two-thirds of the width of the furniture. If you plan to place many or large accessories around the photo, you can deviate from this guideline to allow more space.
  3. Hang the photo 10 to 30 cm above the furniture for a harmonious result.

Hanging wall decoration above the staircase

DON’T – Don’t hang different sizes next to each other.
DO – Let the photos flow together and tell a story.

Hanging your favourite photos along the staircase is a unique and creative way to use this space. Follow these tips for a great end result:

  1. Make sure the wall decoration is aligned with the height of a stair step.
  2. Keep the spacing between the wall decorations consistent. Don’t measure in centimetres, but in stair steps. For example, leave two steps between each piece.
  3. The height between the stair step and the centre of the wall decoration should be between 145 and 155 cm.
  4. Use the same formats when hanging your wall decoration to create a calm and cohesive look.

Tip! Choose a framed photo and match the frame colours to the colour of your staircase for a stylish finish.

Have you ever visited someone and been truly impressed by their wall decoration collection? You can create this too! Read the tips & tricks below to create a successful photo wall or grid:

Photo wall

  • Place your centrepiece (the largest format) in the middle, following the earlier rule of thumb: between 145 and 155 cm above the floor (measured to the centre of the artwork).
  • Use tape to mark a line between 145 and 155 cm. This is your horizontal centre line. Also create a vertical centre line with tape.
  • Keep the distance between all items and the imaginary lines equal (between 5 and 7 cm) to create a balanced and stylish photo wall.

Tip! Vary the type of images. Combine a family photo with a beautiful macro shot and a poster, or add a nice text element.

Extra tip! Besides mixing and matching photos, try creating an interesting combination of different types of wall decoration for an even more dynamic result.

Photo grid

  1. Make all your wall decorations the same size. Make sure each piece is no larger than 20 cm.
  2. Mark a line between 145 and 155 cm above the floor using tape, for example. This is your horizontal centre line.
  3. Hang half of the photos above the centre line and the other half below it.
  4. Keep the spacing between all items equal (between 5 and 7 cm) to create a beautiful, balanced grid on the wall.

Tip! When creating a photo grid, use photo frames in the same colour and the same types of wall decoration. This will make your photos look even more harmonious.

  • Place your centrepiece (the largest size) in the middle of the photo wall and arrange smaller formats around it.
  • Keep the spacing between all photos equal. For a hexagon photo wall, we recommend a gap of no more than 2 cm.
