Winter brings beautiful, magical snowy landscapes that you’ll want to capture with your camera. But what if you’d like to experience that winter feeling — and the beauty of a snow photo — right at home? With a few smart tips and techniques, you can even create an atmospheric snow photo indoors.

Photographing snowy landscapes can be challenging. The bright white scenery can quickly distort the look of your image. Below, you’ll find out how to bring the perfect winter photo with snow into your home!

The best light for a winter snow photo

White landscapes can quickly appear too bright to your camera, causing automatic mode to choose the wrong exposure. As a result, you lose control over how your snow photo will turn out. To achieve the perfect exposure, it’s recommended to shoot in manual mode. Using the histogram can be extremely helpful in this process.

The histogram gives you insight into the light distribution of your photo and shows whether your exposure is properly adjusted to the conditions, the subject and the atmosphere you want to capture. This is not only useful while taking the photo itself, but also during editing and when ultimately printing your snow photos.

White balance sets the mood of your winter photo

In addition to exposure, the colour of your snow photo is strongly influenced by the white balance you choose. An incorrect white balance can make your image appear too blue or too yellow. By carefully adjusting the white balance to the lighting conditions, the colours will look more natural and your photo will capture exactly the atmosphere you’re aiming for.

Are you shooting in RAW? Then you can easily adjust the white balance afterwards, allowing you to decide whether you want to give your winter photo a cooler or warmer look.

Once your photo is technically perfect, the fun part begins: printing! Whether you want to hang a single stunning snow photo on your wall or compile a whole collection in a photo book, at Profotonet you’ll always find the right option to preserve your winter memories.

Please note: if you order your winter photo on brushed aluminium, keep in mind that the white areas (the snow) will take on an aluminium tone.

The type of paper you choose also influences the look of your snow photo. Depending on your taste, you can choose from lustre, (extra) glossy, (deep) matte. Each paper has its own underlying white base tone. In principle, the whites look great on all of our paper types — the choice mainly comes down to personal preference.

Inkjet and Fuji papers contain optical brighteners, making the white appear cooler. They also offer strong black-and-white contrast. FineArt paper, on the other hand, has a warmer white tone. The contrast is still present, but it looks a bit softer. Fuji Pearl gives your snow photo a pearlescent effect, with a subtle metallic glow shimmering over the white areas. Keep these differences in mind when ordering your snow photo.
