Why do waves or ripples appear in my framed photo, and how can I prevent this?
Waves in framed photos can occur when a print reacts to changes in temperature and humidity, especially with larger formats. This often happens along the edges and is seasonal, for example in autumn or during periods with strong temperature fluctuations caused by air conditioning in summer.
Photo paper has a polyethylene (PE) layer that helps keep moisture out, but the paper layer itself can still absorb moisture, which may cause rippling or buckling. To prevent this, the photo can be mounted onto a firm backing, such as acid-free board or polystyrene. Polystyrene is a rigid plastic sheet about 2 mm thick that provides extra support, keeping the photo flat in the frame and preventing waves from forming.

What is FSC-certified paper?
FSC-certified paper is made from wood sourced from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The FSC sets standards for responsible forest management. All our photo books are produced on FSC-certified photo paper, and all our products are packaged using FSC-certified materials. This ensures the paper comes from responsibly managed forests, contributing to sustainable and socially responsible forestry while protecting high-value and vulnerable forest areas.
What colour options are available for a mount (passe-partout)?
You can choose between a black or white mount. The cut edge of the mount is slightly angled to create a subtle depth effect. For both the black and white mount, the angled cut edge is white.
What is conservation framing?
Our framing service uses materials and techniques that offer the best possible protection for your photo. The print is mounted onto polystyrene using acid-free adhesive to prevent warping, and the mount (passe-partout) is made from high-quality materials that won’t affect the print.
Because all materials are carefully selected to minimise any deterioration of the photo over time, this approach is known as conservation framing. It ensures you can enjoy your beautiful print for many years to come.
What are the dimensions of the mounts (passe-partouts)?
Our mounts are 5 cm wide on each side. This means that a 20 × 30 cm photo without a mount fits into a 20 × 30 cm frame, while a 20 × 30 cm photo with a mount requires a 30 × 40 cm frame.
To determine the final frame size, simply add 10 cm to both the width and height of your photo.
What material are your mounts (passe-partouts) made of?
Our mounts feature an outer layer of high-quality white or black paper and a core of pH-neutral white alpha cellulose (wood pulp). They are completely acid-free and lignin-free. Being acid-free ensures that the colours of the print are preserved optimally, while lignin-free materials prevent the mount itself from discolouring over time.
Profotonet’s framing service therefore uses materials and techniques that protect your photo. This is known as conservation framing, ensuring you can enjoy your beautiful print for many years to come.
Which product is best suited for my exhibition?
All of our paper types meet the highest quality standards. If you’d like your prints to be professionally finished and ready to hang right away, you can choose to have them mounted on a backing or framed by us.
If you opt for mounting, we recommend mounting on Dibond, or sandwiching the print between Dibond and plexiglass. Dibond is specifically designed to remain stable in a wide range of conditions and will stay flat and straight in most environments, making it an excellent choice for exhibitions.
Can I receive test prints?
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to create test prints of photo book pages. However, you can order individual photo prints as a test to check whether they reasonably match what you see on your screen. We work according to strict calibration standards for all our machines, so if your monitor is properly calibrated, you shouldn’t encounter any surprises.
